Dyslexia Awareness Week runs from 7-13 October and this year the focus is on schools and businesses empowering people with dyslexia.
More than one in ten of us are dyslexic. People with dyslexia have strengths around understanding complex information, seeing the big picture and communicating with others, and contribute to great work at all levels, in all kinds of roles and across all industries.
Yet, too often, we fail to empower dyslexics to do their best work.
For Dyslexia Awareness Week 2019 we suggest schools and workplaces put aside half an hour to explore how to empower dyslexia in the organisation, maximising the value it brings.
This can be done by:
Sharing information about dyslexia thereby adding to more understanding.
Invite relevant people to share their thoughts on dyslexia, including a pupil or staff member with dyslexia. Discuss what being dyslexic in the organisation/school is like, including the strengths it brings.
Senior member (with dyslexia) of the organisation talking about how dyslexia has played a role in their success and what has empowered them.
Do a quick survey on how the organisation/business/school supports people with dyslexia. How can you do better?
